Alexandria Rockey began her journey at 51成人动漫 in August 2020, stepping into the role of Professor of Academic Technology during the height of the pandemic. Since then, she has worked diligently to support fellow faculty members through professional development opportunities while teaching a variety of courses, from Introduction to Microsoft Word to Introduction to AI. Outside of the classroom, she explores innovative strategies for mobile-friendly course design and shares her insights on teaching through a weekly research blog.

Although Alexandria is not originally from Bakersfield, her family moved here after her husband completed his PhD and accepted a position in the Biology Department at BC. At the time, she was still completing her education, graduating just over a year later. As her connection with the college deepened, she she was excited to join the faculty team when the opportunity came available. 鈥淚 have been a big fan of Bakersfield College,鈥 she shares. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always been really cool to see just how much of a foundation of the community 51成人动漫 is. I was really excited to get to be a part of that.鈥

With her passion for education and admiration for BC鈥檚 role in the community, stepping into a position at the college felt like a natural step. 鈥淚 didn鈥檛 grow up here, but my mom was born in Shafter in a migrant working camp, and so for us, it was kind of a full circle moment for me to be able to be a professor at 51成人动漫,鈥 she says. 鈥淢y grandmother would have just been blown away to know that her granddaughter was teaching here.鈥

Alexandria earned her undergraduate degree in English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, followed by a master鈥檚 and PhD in Education from the University of California, Davis. Driven by a strong interest in online learning, she centered her doctoral research on the topic. 鈥淲hen I did my PhD, I focused on online education specifically,鈥 she explains, 鈥渂ecause I had a nine-month-old daughter when I started grad school, and I didn鈥檛 have time to observe classes face-to-face. I saw a really huge potential in [online] education to help provide access to high-quality [learning] experiences for students who have very busy lives.鈥

She finds the most rewarding part of her work in academic technology to be the connections she builds with her students. Despite not always meeting face-to-face, she takes pride in fostering a supportive learning environment that helps students shift their mindset and build confidence. 鈥淚 really love it when they tell me that it's clear that I care,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 love when I get feedback that I鈥檝e made the class easier for them or that they felt scared about taking the class, but now they feel really confident with it.鈥

In addition to her work with students, Rockey is equally enthusiastic about supporting her colleagues. She values the opportunity to coach fellow faculty members and encourage them to explore creative ways to enhance student success. 鈥淭he faculty at BC are just really passionate about teaching and supporting students,鈥 she notes. Her courses, such as Introduction to AI, are designed not only to equip students with vital knowledge and skills related to artificial intelligence, but also create an inclusive, encouraging learning environment where both students and faculty feel supported.

鈥淲e [offer these] courses every semester and, so far, they鈥檝e been filling up, so there is definitely demand,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd next semester, we鈥檒l be offering an AI for Teachers certificate, [involving] quick noncredit courses for faculty on how they can leverage AI in their own teaching and help students [learn] how to use AI responsibly and ethically within the classroom.鈥

Her extensive expertise and experience in the field of academic technology flourished during her time in graduate school. She explains, 鈥淚 got a job as a graduate student researcher for the academic technology department at UC Davis. In that role, I did a lot of the [work] that I do here, like creating professional development, working in faculty support, and thinking about ways to leverage technology for learning. And I just fell in love with the idea of using technology and playing around with it.鈥

When she is not teaching or researching new ways to approach learning, Professor Rockey enjoys spending her free time traveling and hiking across the world with her family. Her career goals for the future involve applying for new grants, expanding her research, writing another book, and enhancing her courses to make them more engaging for students. 鈥淚 want every student who walks out of my class to feel confident knowing how to tackle a problem and feeling confident with technology,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 really want them to feel like they can do anything as long as they put their minds to it.鈥
